Researchers estimate that millions of people worldwide have experienced some form of Long COVID. While scientists have learned a great deal since the pandemic began, they are still working to understand exactly why some individuals recover quickly while others continue experiencing symptoms for months or even years.
Several theories are currently being investigated, including persistent immune activation, viral remnants, inflammation, changes in the gut microbiome, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and alterations in normal immune regulation. One area receiving growing attention is the possible role of mast cells and histamine signaling, which may help explain why some Long COVID symptoms overlap with conditions involving immune activation.
